Voting in Hawaii
Here are the answers to FAQs about voting and political party affiliation.
Voter Registration: How do I register to vote or check my voter registration?
Click here to easily register or verify your registration online with your Hawaii drivers license or State ID and your Social Security Number, or download this form if you’d like to register by mail. Please note, you will not find your party affiliation on your voter registration because Hawaii voters do not declare a political affiliation, a measure to ensure citizens right to secrecy.
Primary Election: Do I have to be a member of a political party in order to vote in a Primary Election?
No. For primary elections, voters must select a party preference on their ballot and then vote for candidates of that political affiliation only or the vote will not count. Checking a party preference on your ballot does NOT register you as a member of that party. Voters may vote for candidates for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and county contests regardless of any party affiliation.
General Election: Do I have to be a member of a political party to vote in the General Election?
No. The general election is a candidate contest, meaning you may vote for the candidates of your choice regardless of political affiliation. Voters may select federal, state, county, and Office of Hawaiian Affairs candidates, as well as State Constitutional Amendments and/or Charter Amendments.
Presidential Elections: Do I have to be a member of a certain political party to vote for a Presidential Candidate?
No. Presidential candidates will only appear general election ballot. Voters may vote for the candidate of their choice, regardless of current or past party affiliation.
